Peter prepares for FINA World Series in Sheffield

SOUTHAMPTON-based diver Peter Waterfield is this month (April, 2010) preparing for the third stage of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) Diving World Series in Sheffield.

The Olympic and Commonwealth diver will be taking part in the final leg of the series at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Saturday, April, 23 and Sunday, April 24.

Twenty-eight-year-old Peter, who won the first medal for Great Britain at the 2004 Olympics, said: “I am very excited about competing in the third stage of the FINA Diving World Series.

“I will be entering the 10 metre platform synchronised dive with my partner, Max Brick and the three metre synchronised dive with Chris Mears.

“Unfortunately I will not be able to take part in the second leg, which will be held in Mexico on April 16 and 17, due to a knee injury. However, I am feeling confident about the event in Sheffield and hope to be back on form after a couple of weeks’ rest.”

The FINA Diving World Series is a diving competition series held annually since 2007. It takes place in locations around the world and divers collect points depending on their results to determine the World Series champions.

The first stage of the series was held in Qingdao, China on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28. Peter and Max entered the 10 metre platform synchronised dive and came sixth.

Peter won three gold medals at the 2010 British Gas National Cup in Sheffield in February. He was awarded a score of 523.65 in the men’s 10 metre individual dive, beating World Champion Tom Daley to first place by 40.05 points.

At the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Rostock in Germany, which also took place in February, Peter scooped a silver medal.

He beat current Olympic champion, Matt Mitcham, who won the gold medal for Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, in the semi-final and the final of the 10 metre individual platform event with a score of 510.20.
